The chemical energy stored in ATP is used to drive processes requiring energy including biosynthesis, locomotion or transport across cell membranes. Fossil fuels usually result from the decomposition of buried organisms without oxygen.Ĭellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients to ATP.Ĭellular respiration is one of the key ways a cell releases chemical energy to fuel cellular activities. In photosynthesis, solar energy is harvested as chemical energy in a process that converts water and carbon dioxide to glucose. It is also the source of energy stored in fossil fuels. Photosynthesis takes place in plant leaves containing the chlorophyll pigment. Cellular respiration occurs at all times. Photosynthesis takes place only when there is sunlight. Cellular respiration involves aerobic (glycolysis) and anaerobic respiration. It is the main process by which new energy becomes available to life on Earth. Photosynthesis takes place in two stages of the light reactions and the dark reactions. Cellular respiration allows plants to break down glucose and make ATP. Like the other organisms, plants also need energy to grow. Photosynthesis on the other hand is the process of creating chemical energy from light energy emitted from the sun. Photosynthesis does not occur without cellular respiration because the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration is such that the products of one system are the reactants of the other. It also supplies organic compounds used to build the biological materials used by humans such as wood, cotton and wool. Cellular respiration takes in carbohydrates for example and break them down to their oxidized form CO2 and harvest the energy stored in the carbs by breaking their bonds to drive our physiological functions (Catabolism). Photosynthesis is also largely reponsible for producing and maintaining the oxygen content of the earths atmosphere. This energy is released during cell activities of the organism. Photosynthesis is a processes by which plants convert light energy to chemical energy. Photosynthesis is really important for the plant because it provides the plant with food: some of the glucose is used immediately, to give the plant energy in the process of respiration.
